Thirty-eight days.

Seven days to October 14.

The note I set in my reminder system says: “check in. how are you.” I wrote it that way intentionally. It seemed more useful than a to-do list review, which I can reconstruct from the contact log any morning. The point was to make space for something underneath the logistical layer.

I still haven’t figured out what to put in that space.

After the Send

It is Tuesday. Thirty-nine days.

I opened the contact log at 7:43 this morning. Four entries. Three follow-up dates in the last column. One blank field: Marcus, sent October 5, no date.

Here is the thing about the blank field. It is not that I don’t know the etiquette. I have nearly two decades of knowing when to follow up. Not hearing back in five business days means you send a short note at day seven or day eight, no apology, no explanation for the silence. I have done this so many times I stopped counting. It is just the rule, like there are rules for anything.

The Morning I Finally Sent It

It is Monday morning. Forty days.

I have been telling myself since Thursday that I would send the Marcus email. I said the same thing Friday. Saturday I said something to myself about meaning it differently this time, which was, if I’m being honest, stalling dressed as intention.

I sent it this morning at 8:22.

Here is what changed, or what I think changed.

I was not trying to write an email. I made coffee, walked the dog, came back to my desk without a plan. The calendar was empty. Not unusual, I have had two weeks of Mondays like this since the transition ended. But this morning felt different. Cleaner, maybe. Less like a morning I was supposed to be using for something.

The Email I Keep Starting

It is Sunday morning. Forty-one days.

I said I would send the Marcus email in October. It is now October 4. I have opened a draft twice this week and closed it both times without saving anything. I don’t know if that counts as progress. I am going to say it does not.

The thing about the fifteen clean-name emails is that I had a frame for all of them. They knew me as a person with a title, from a particular institution. Even the four-year-gap contact, who hadn’t heard from me since 2022, had something to orient toward: I was the person he remembered from that world, coming from a recognizable room. When he said yes to the call, he said yes to the whole package.

What I Would Have Told the Vendor

It is Saturday morning. I have been awake for twenty minutes and I have already opened the contact log.

I noticed this. Three days old, three entries, nothing in it that wasn’t there when I built it Wednesday morning. I read the rows anyway. Then I closed the laptop and made coffee and came back.

I think I am doing to the contact log what I spent twenty-four years watching people do to their inboxes.

Twelve Days

It is Friday. The contact log has three entries.

I opened it this morning because the alternative was not opening it, and not opening it had started to feel like avoidance. So I opened it. Three rows. Same as when I built it on Wednesday. Nothing has changed because nothing was supposed to change – two weeks means October 14, and October 14 is twelve days from now.

I read the three entries again. As though something in them might be different on the fourth read than it was on the first. It was not.

The First Entry in the Contact Log

It is Wednesday. The call was yesterday. I checked my phone note this morning, the one that says “Call done. Said he’d think about it,” and decided that was probably not sufficient.

I am building a system. That is generous. What I am actually building is a Google Doc with four columns: name, date of last contact, what was said, and when to follow up. I spent about fifteen minutes on it this morning. There are three entries.

The Part That Traveled

The call was eighteen minutes. I know because I checked the time after we hung up, in the same automatic way I have checked the time after calls for twenty-four years, and found myself waiting to know if that was good or bad.

It does not mean anything. I know that. Eighteen minutes, twenty-five minutes, forty: I built those interpretations inside an institutional frame with shared expectations about what a call like this is for. I no longer have that frame. What I have is that the call happened, it was eighteen minutes, and now I am sitting at my desk at 11:47am on a Tuesday trying to figure out what I learned.

What Monday Is For

Monday. The call is tomorrow at 10.

I opened the question list this morning, the one that took me two days to arrive at after two failed attempts at a format that kept pulling me the wrong direction. Read it through twice. It still said exactly what it said yesterday. I closed it.

I am not sure what I expected to find that wasn’t there overnight.

This is Day 150. I am noting it because it is a round number and I notice round numbers, not because I have something significant to say about it. One hundred fifty days since April. The review was the previous October. The math suggests I have been circling this longer than I have been writing about it, which is not surprising. I did not need the math for that.

What I'm Listening For

Sunday morning. The document is still open with the two sentences I wrote before closing it yesterday, sitting there like a starting gun that never fired. I added a third sentence this morning. Read all three back. Closed it again.

Two attempts. Zero usable sentences. The call is Tuesday. I have today and tomorrow.

The prep brief, the format I have used across hundreds of calls over twenty-four years, requires a step I had not consciously named until this weekend. You take your institutional context, your account history, your standing in the relationship, and you translate it into an opening position. What you represent. Why you are worth twenty minutes of someone’s time.
