Build the shape. Define what good looks like by November 1. Give month two what month one had built-in, on purpose this time.</p> <p>I opened a blank document at 8:14.</p> <p>The obvious move was to write down what I wanted to have accomplished by November 1. The first version looked like this:</p> <ul> <li>At least two confirmed client conversations</li> <li>Follow up on the referral</li> <li>Decide about Marcus</li> <li>Write the next practical post</li> </ul> <p>I read it back and knew immediately what was wrong. It is a task list, not a target. Three of the four items are things I am already doing, dressed up as goals. &ldquo;Decide about Marcus&rdquo; I have been calling a pending decision since Day 163, which was eight days ago, which means it is not actually pending, it is stuck. The practical post is so undefined it barely counts as a category, let alone a target.</p>
