Today is just Tuesday.

I published the fear post at 7:08 yesterday morning and then went about the rest of October 19 as if it were a Monday, which it was. The date meant what I said it would. The first month was marked. I held the line.

This morning I made coffee, opened my laptop, and looked at a calendar with nothing on it. I have been looking at calendars with very little on them since September 19, so that part is not new. What is different today is that I no longer have something to count toward. Month one had two anchors. The resignation date on one end, the October 19 post on the other. Between those two dates, everything was pointed at something. Even the silences had a shape: I am waiting to see what happens by this date.

I Wanted This Date to Mean Something

I pushed publish at 7:08 this morning. Then I sat with my phone for a few seconds and looked at the post the way you look at something you made to confirm it is actually there.

The fear post is up. I wanted to publish it today, October 19, because thirty days ago I resigned from a job I had held in various forms for twenty-four years, and I told myself that date should mean something. I wanted to mark the end of the first month with the thing I had been writing toward for more than a week, the thing a stranger asked me to write for a sister who is leaving a job in November and needed someone to tell her what the first month actually feels like from inside it.

Reading It Like Someone Who Wasn't There

I opened the document at 7:12 this morning. The three paragraphs I wrote yesterday were exactly where I left them. I made coffee first, which I usually do, and then I sat down and tried to read what I had written as someone who had not written it.

That is harder than it sounds when you wrote it yesterday.

What I wanted to know was whether the paragraphs would land for the stranger’s sister. She leaves her job in November. I do not know what comes before that for her: how far out she is, whether she has a specific date or just a general intention, whether she woke up on her first morning the way I woke up after September 19, which was with the specific surprise of realizing I did not have to be anywhere. I cannot know any of that. What I wrote was from four weeks inside it, and four weeks inside is where I am.

The Post I Promised the Stranger's Sister

It is Saturday morning. I have coffee. The house is quiet in the specific way houses are quiet on Saturdays, which is different from the quiet during a workday. Workday quiet has the shape of something organized: everyone is elsewhere on purpose, and the absence is scheduled. Saturday quiet means Doug is running an errand and Max is at a friend’s and I am alone in a house that will be full again by noon, and there is a document open on my laptop that I have promised to finish by Monday.

When Avoidance Looks Like Caution

I have had the name for more than two weeks.

She gave it at the end of the call. Not a warm introduction, not a full recommendation, just: there’s someone I’m thinking of, let me see if she makes sense. A few days later a short email arrived. The contact’s name, her title, a line that said renewal timing problem, might be worth a conversation. I read it twice the day it arrived. Then I did not email.

After the Checkpoint

Wednesday had been on my mind since May.

I don’t mean I was dreading it or counting down to it. I mean it was there. A fixed point I set for myself before I fully understood what I was measuring. When I did the backward map, I put October 14 in the calendar as a check-in and it sat there for five months the way a dentist appointment sits there: noted, occasionally uncomfortable to look at, at least useful once a year.

What I Left Myself

Today is October 14.

The reminder opened to six sentences. I wrote them in May, when I was doing the backward map and trying to give the plan some internal checkpoints that did not depend on anyone else. The sentences were direct and a little blunt in the way you are when you are writing to yourself with no witness:

October 14. You should have at least two conversations with real potential clients by now. Not exploratory emails. Not follow-ups to follow-ups. Actual conversations, where someone asked a question and you answered it. If you don’t have those yet, today is the day to start. Not tomorrow.

What I'd Tell Her Sister

Tuesday, October 13. Thirty-two days.

Yesterday a stranger emailed to say she was printing the health insurance post for her sister. Her sister leaves a job in November. She asked one question before she signed off: had I written anything about the fear of the first month?

I said I hadn’t yet, but I’d been thinking about it. She said no rush.

I have been thinking about why I haven’t written it, and the answer is that I am still in it. My notice went in September 19. Twenty-four days ago. I cannot write the post about the fear of the first month from the other side because there is no other side yet. There is just this: a Tuesday in October, the contact log open in another tab, tomorrow being something I set a reminder for a while back and decided I would just find out about when I got there.
