Where the Noticing Goes

The third email is still unanswered and Monday is not over yet. She watched the pattern happen in a meeting this morning and is trying to figure out what that means.

Monday morning I checked my inbox at 7:14, before opening anything else. Nothing from Thursday’s email. I had named Monday or Tuesday as the realistic window, and I told myself it was still morning, both of which are true and neither of which changed what zero responses feels like.

By 9am I was on a Q3 coverage call. Four accounts, the kind of meeting where someone walks through a deck and everyone nods until the hour runs out. Third account in, the presenter marked it “on track.” Usage data stable, last QBR logged in February, renewal in October.

The decision-maker on that account changed eight months ago. The new person hasn’t been in a QBR since Q1. A ten-year relationship with the previous VP of Operations is not the same thing as a relationship with the person who is now deciding whether to renew. I wrote three sentences in the chat. The call pivoted for about four minutes. Someone said they’d schedule a check-in. We moved on.

That is the whole event. I kept thinking about it for the rest of the afternoon, which is why I’m telling you.

I have been writing a document since June. Eight stories and a meeting note from 2017, all of them about the same thing: seeing something early, before it becomes unavoidable, and holding the observation while the situation still has room to go differently. At the bottom of the document are two sentences I cannot finish. Both of them are about what happens to this pattern after November.

The first sentence is about what the noticing is for.

This morning I watched it happen the way it has always happened, in the room where it has always happened. I saw a gap. I said three sentences. The call changed for four minutes. That is what the noticing is for, inside the institution. I have done that calculation for twenty-four years, I just never had a name for it until I started writing it down.

What I have not been able to write is what the noticing is for in November. When someone hires me to do the thing I did at 9am, and they know they’re hiring me for it, and the question is whether I can find the right gap in their situation and say the right three sentences at the right time. On a call I arranged, not one I was invited to.

I think the mechanism is the same. I don’t feel, sitting here, that what happened this morning required a company around it. It felt like something I do, that a company has been the primary beneficiary of for a long time. Which is the thought I keep having and also the thought I keep wanting to qualify, because thinking it is not the same as doing it outside the container. The sentence wants certainty I can only get from the other side.

The second sentence starts “Which is why” and stops. That one is further away. The “why” requires knowing what November and December look like from the inside, and I do not have that yet. I am not going to force it.

The August 4 note is still a note. I opened my phone twice this afternoon and saw it both times. “August 4, first Tuesday, pick the next name, write the email.” Both times I left it there. I do not know exactly what I’m waiting for. The calendar is the same four taps away it was this morning. Something is not ready. From the inside, that is indistinguishable from me not being ready, and I am not sure the distinction matters.

The inbox is still empty. Tuesday still exists.
