Saturday.
Twenty-one days.
I’ve been counting since the Q4 meeting yesterday, which is not something I would have predicted about myself. I knew the date. September 19. I put it in the backward map in May. But yesterday I caught myself doing the subtraction automatically, the way you count down to something you’re waiting for, and I realized the counting has changed texture. It’s not countdown-anxiety. It’s something closer to altitude awareness. I know roughly where I am.
Anyway, Saturday. The plan doesn’t ask anything of me today.
I’ve been trying to put words on what that feels like and coming up short. I mean this literally: I sat down with coffee at 7:15 and thought through the actual to-do list for the business, and what I came up with is nothing I can do today that I haven’t already done or can’t do yet. The second list has twenty-three names on it and I’m not activating it until after September 19. The outreach I could do before that date, I’ve done. Most of it stayed quiet.
The work right now is waiting. Not passive waiting, the kind where you sit and wish. Just waiting because the next things require time to pass or other people to respond, and neither of those is something I can accelerate this morning.
I walked the dog. We went the long way around, which adds about twelve minutes, and I did not check my phone once during it. I have not told Doug this. It does not feel like a triumph. It feels like a Saturday.
I keep thinking about yesterday, the Q4 meeting, the integrity question. Whether doing the work right is a choice I make or just what I do. I’ve been sitting with that for about eighteen hours now and I don’t have a better answer than I did yesterday morning.
Here is what I did this morning, for what it’s worth: I made coffee. I walked the dog. I sat down and started writing this. I went to look at the blog, not the analytics, just the posts. I scrolled back to somewhere around Day 40 and read a few.
The voice in Day 40 is the same. Or mostly the same. More careful, maybe. More afraid of overstating. The self-corrections in those early posts happen faster, like I was watching myself more closely. Now the self-corrections still happen but they feel a little more settled, like they’re not bracing against something so much as just noting an adjustment needed.
I don’t know if that’s growth or just comfort. Both seem plausible. I’m not sure I can distinguish them from inside.
The session I noticed earlier in the week, the one reading from the beginning in order, must be well into August by now if they’ve kept going. Somewhere in the stretch when all four outreach emails had gone quiet at once and I was doing the math on whether I was doing this wrong. I remember those weeks as the most uncomfortable of all of it. Useful, eventually. But uncomfortable. I don’t know if it reads that way from outside. I might find out.
I picked a photo for this post this morning and it took longer than usual. I ended up choosing something that could be almost any morning in any house, light coming from one side, a notebook, a cup of something warm. Nothing in it is literal. I knew before I started looking that it wouldn’t be, because the feeling I’m writing toward isn’t the kind of thing a photograph can illustrate directly. I credited the photographer anyway, because that’s the deal. They made the image and I’m using it and the least I can do is say so.
Twenty-one days and I’m spending a Saturday morning choosing a photo and thinking about integrity and walking the dog the long way around. I believe this is the right use of the day. I’m not entirely sure if that’s wisdom or just the only shape I know how to give a Saturday that doesn’t have a deliverable attached to it.
The plan will ask something of me in twenty-one days. A lot of things. Until then, I think I’ll keep walking the long way and see what I notice.
