It’s Monday. I know it’s Monday not because anything looks different but because I checked.
For 24 years, Monday had a texture. Sunday night had a particular kind of anticipatory tension that started around 8pm and lived in my shoulders until I had opened my email and made a first pass at the week. I called this staying ahead of things. I think what I was actually doing was rehearsing control, which is a different activity that I did not examine until I stopped having anything to control on a Sunday night.
This morning I woke up at 6:52 and there was no texture. Just Monday, announced by the date on my phone.
Twelve days to November 14.
The container expired yesterday. Zero conversations confirmed across nine contacts. I named this Sunday morning in as plain a way as I could, and I do not have anything to add to the naming. What I am sitting with today is something adjacent: I keep waiting for the next container to present itself, the way the other ones did. The backward map arrived from the calendar logic. The attorney consultation arrived from the employment agreement I found in a box. The contact log arrived from the silence of August. Each time I needed somewhere to put the waiting, and each time the container showed up.
The waiting I have now does not need a container. It needs a direction.
I know the difference, I think. A container holds the time until something resolves. A direction points at what you are building next. I have been building containers since April, and I am good at containers, but what the next thing requires is not holding time. It is pointing somewhere. And pointing somewhere requires knowing where, which is the part I do not have yet.
I opened the document this morning. Not to add anything. Just to look.
It has seven stories in it. The $2.2M renewal from 2019. The telecom situation in 2021. The conference napkin from 2022. A few others. What I wrote down, each time, was not the process. It was the moment of reading the room and knowing something the room hadn’t said yet. The document has been sitting in a folder called “the document” for five months, which is genuinely the least imaginative file name I have ever given anything, and I am someone who named a spreadsheet “The Plan.” I am not good at titles when I do not know what something is.
Seven stories. An unfinished sentence. Two paragraphs at the end I have not looked at in three weeks.
Zoe said the document sounds like something I am already doing. I have been carrying that sentence since August and have not acted on it because acting on it would require deciding what the document is. Is it consulting support material, the honest version of the handoff brief I used to write inside the institution? Is it something else, something for a person who is trying to understand what they are good at before they can name the service? I cannot tell yet. Both feel true depending on which paragraph I am looking at, which suggests I have not finished writing it.
What I can say is that it points somewhere. The same direction as the practical posts. The same direction as the blog. Something that exists for the person who needs it, which is a description so vague I would cross it out in someone else’s one-pager and write “be specific.” I am trying to hold the direction while the specific resolves itself, which is not how I usually do things. I usually have the specific before I let myself have the direction.
Twelve days.
I keep doing the arithmetic, which does not help: twelve days times twenty-four hours is 288 hours, and the math does not tell me what to fill it with. What I have is the document, 184 days of this blog, some knowledge that the direction exists even when I cannot name the destination.
I have been in this situation before. Not with consulting. But with the blog, actually. On Day 1 I did not know what this was. I started anyway, with the one thing I was sure of, which was that I had something to say about the inside of a decision I had not yet made. I built it post by post and found out what it was by doing it. That is not a method I would have approved in April. I approved it anyway, and here we are.
I do not know if the document works the same way. I do not know if the consulting gets traction or if the direction I am feeling is real or just what it feels like to have cleared the negative and not yet found the positive.
Twelve days. I am not going to have this figured out by then.
I am starting to think that might be okay, and also I am not sure I believe that yet.
