Yesterday was the ceremony. Today is just Tuesday.
I published the fear post at 7:08 yesterday morning and then went about the rest of October 19 as if it were a Monday, which it was. The date meant what I said it would. The first month was marked. I held the line.
This morning I made coffee, opened my laptop, and looked at a calendar with nothing on it. I have been looking at calendars with very little on them since September 19, so that part is not new. What is different today is that I no longer have something to count toward. Month one had two anchors. The resignation date on one end, the October 19 post on the other. Between those two dates, everything was pointed at something. Even the silences had a shape: I am waiting to see what happens by this date.
Month two has no built-in deadline. I gave it none. I did not think to give it one.
Thirteen days now since the Marcus follow-up. I have looked at that number more than is useful. The question I named last week, third note or let it go, is still technically open. “Technically open” is what I say when I have not decided. What I know is that persistence and the thing past persistence look identical when you are doing them, and I do not have a reliable way to tell which one I am doing from the inside.
The referral email has been unanswered for four days, which is probably not long enough to count. I know that. I am still checking the inbox twice what makes sense for something four days old. Awareness is not the same as a fix.
I have four entries in my contact log. I have been calling it a contact log because “four entries” sounds like progress. It is not entirely wrong. What is more accurate is: five conversations, two follow-ups sent, no confirmed interest, four cells in a Google Sheet. I am not sure what the honest name for that is.
The thing I keep coming back to today is that in twenty-four years, every month came pre-structured. End-of-month reporting. A renewal calendar with dates I did not invent. Quarterly reviews that told me what good looked like on the fifteenth and the thirtieth and the last business day of the quarter. Even when I was running my own accounts, I was running them inside a framework somebody else had built.
Month two has none of that. I need to give it a shape on purpose.
That sounds like a reasonable thing to say. I have been saying reasonable things to myself since September 19 and the score is: reasonable-things-said, a lot; shapes-built, one. The one I built was the October 19 deadline I gave myself at the beginning of month one. It worked. Which means I know something about how to do this. I just have not done it yet for month two.
The question is what the target is. Something concrete enough that on November 1 I would know whether I hit it or missed it. I am not there yet. I am circling it, which is different from getting there, and I know the difference.
I checked the analytics this morning, the way I do sometimes, not because the number changes anything but because I am curious about what the blog is doing when I am not watching it. The fear post has been up for less than twenty-four hours. There is already a small trail of sessions. Small enough not to mean much and large enough that I looked a second time.
I will probably never know if the stranger’s sister found it. I published it anyway, and it is there if she does.
Month two is blank and that is mine to fix. I understood that abstractly when I resigned. I understand it differently now that I am standing in it with no deadline, no framework, and a contact log that sounds more complete than it is.
I have done harder things than build a framework. I am trying to remember which of those things I did while I was still in the middle of not knowing how.
